about
i've been struggling with italian bureaucracy since 2012 and i've faced with various difficulties during all those years.
unfortunately if you are not able to understand italian (even if you do!), there are not so many sources to guide you through those processes so i decided to create this blog to share my experiences about permesso di soggiorno, hope that it would help you.

permesso di soggiorno studio
so you already had your visa, came to Italy, had some gelato and pizza? you had enough fun and energy i would say, now take a deep breath and there we go! the famous PERMESSO DI SOGGIORNO!
there are two types of pds, one is pds studio for educational reasons and the other one is pds lavoro for working purposes.
even the things with pds lavoro is a little bit complicated, it has almost the same procedure with pds studio, except prefettura part that i will explain later on.
before starting, why do we need permesso di soggiorno? because we are the citizens of the non-eu countries and to stay legally in Italy we all need this card, but how to do it?
the first step is to get the kit from any office of posta italia (the kit is also called busta gialla) that you would need to fill with your details. also your school may assist you to have that kit.
you got the kit and your very first surprise, it's written all in italian!!
so let's don't be lazy and learn some more italian words guys!
COGNOME=SURNAME
NOME=NAME
PROVINCIA=DISTRICT
COMUNE=MUNICIPALITY (CITY)
INDIRIZZO=ADDRESS
CAP=ZIP CODE
DURATA DEL VISTO= DURATION OF VISA
VALIDO DAL-SINO AL= VALIDATION DATES
FIRMA=SIGNATURE
QUESTURA=POLICE STATION
INDICARE IL NUMERO TOTALE DI FOGLI= INDICATION OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PAGES
the kit that you need to fill is MODULO 1 ( the code is 01) and you would need to fill only the first 3 pages. one thing to remember is you would need to fill the form with capital letters and with a black pen.
if you are applying for the first time you need to cross the box of RILASCIO and permesso di soggiorno the code of the topology should be 24.
after you fill all the details now you need to go to posta italia, wait for two hours, break records in candy crush and then send the kit! be sure that you have included in the kit your health insurance, photocopy of all the pages of your passport, copy of your codice fiscale, admission letter from the university, and some economic resources declaration (6500 Eur per year).
the officer will give you one receipt and an appointment in a police station. now you are legal in italy! but it's not over yet!
the receipt proves that you have made the application for pds, and it allows you to travel only within your country and italy with direct flights. for enjoying amsterdam you would need to wait 20 more days!
the code on the right side of the receipt is the code that you can track the status of your pds, meanwhile on the left side you will see a code which is your password. you may check each step from here: https://www.portaleimmigrazione.it/ELI2ImmigrazioneWEB/Pagine/StartPage.aspx
keep in mind that you should not input the symbol "-", you should type all the rest. i have no idea why they are doing like this, i guess otherwise it would be so easy and surely we wouldn't want this one!
after 20 days you will receive a message to your phone stating the place that you can take your pds.
a practical information for you, even if they write in the receipt an hour like 11:04 (ahahaha punctual italians) , don't consider it, just go early and make your things done.
later on i will try to put some screenshots, please leave a comment if i've missed something so i can edit it.

permesso di soggiorno lavoro
okay, let's take a look to the processes of pds lavoro.
here i will explain the conversion of permesso di soggiorno studio to permesso di soggiorno lavoro.
there are two different ways of applying for pds lavoro. the procedure could be as following below:
prefettura--> posta italia --> questura
posta italia-->prefettura --> questura
as you may see, the only difference from pds studio processes is the part of prefettura. prefettura is the place where they make the conversion and give the authorization to your documents.
if your pds is ending soon, you may try to make the application from posta italia first ( for not being illegal in italy) and then you can go to prefettura, take the conversion, turn back to questura with that conversion and finish the process, that was how i did.
differently from pds studio, they didn't ask me for a health insurance, i guess the companies are covering that one, that should be the reason. remember that you will need to fill both module 1 and module 2 in the kit that you get from questura. see the pictures below!!!!
let's see what to do for each step:
prefettura- conversion of studio to lavoro
posta- sending the kit
questura- checking the documents and issuing the pds
first step is to register to the website below and fill the documents online.
https://nullaostalavoro.interno.it/Ministero/index2.jsp
one thing to consider is, for the contracts of determinato, indeterminato and apprendistato the form that you need to fill should be V2, for contratto progetto it should be Z2.
in these forms you are being asked to fill your details but also some information about the company (code of partita iva etc). after you fill all the forms you need to buy marca da bollo and insert its number to the last form and send the application. in couple of days you will receive a mail of appointment. another thing to remember is you need to present all the documents in italian! here are the list of the documents:
in the mail you will find an attachment with another module called module Q. this module is made from the details that you have filled, your company should need to fill and sign this module. you need to have 3 copies of this one and you can only change the numbers in the last page! ( the number of the employees, the number of non eu employees etc)
after this step you need to go to prefettura, they will authorize the conversion (for me it took only 5 min and they didn't even check all the documents that they have asked!) and then you can go to questura and then finalize the process.
your pds lavoro should be in line with your contract. if you have 2 years of contract, it should be 2 years, if you have indeterminato, it would be again 2 years but then you need to renew it. for progetto it will be the same with the length of your contract. but!!!
it didn't work like this for me, even if i had 2 years of contract, they gave me 1 year of pds lavoro because there should be at least 5000 Eur that has to be paid to INPS from the company. honestly that didn't seem so real to me, i guess they just wanted me to make another application next year and pay again.
also for the pds lavoro you may track your application from the link below:
https://www.portaleimmigrazione.it/ELI2ImmigrazioneWEB/Pagine/StartPage.aspx
it doesn't seem working well though, before getting my pds the website told me that there were missing documents but they gave my pds without any problem and even now i check the site it is still not updated. but it may give you some information, if you are lucky enough!
that's the overall process, now you can forget everything that i wrote and experience all the differences that you will face during your application!
good luck!

renewal of permesso di soggiorno
so luckily you found an internship, let's see how to renew your permesso di soggiorno.
all the procedure is the same, first you need to go to posta italia and have the kit, complete it (SEE THE PICTURES BELOW), go to questura with your documents and extend your permesso di soggiorno.
for renewing there are couple of things you need to take into consideration:
1) your internship should be related to your study and you need to show the contract in questura.
2) you need to renew your insurance ( this should be done in posta italia and your new permesso will have the expiry dates according to your insurance)
3) again, copies of all the pages of your passport
4) don't forget to tick 'rinnovo'
and there you go, new permesso di soggiorno!
forgive me for my terrible photoshop skills!
